How Corrective Exercises Can Help You Save Money

Research suggests that musculoskeletal pain is more common now than it was 40 years ago. So this makes me think that due to a decrease in physical activity and sedentary lifestyles may lead to muscular dysfunction and ultimately injuries. These injuries can not only cost you days at work, but also hospital and doctor visits that will cost you money. There are four areas that we will discuss that can have a decrease in proper movement patterns due to inactivity:

  1. Foot and Ankle
  2. Low Back
  3. Knee
  4. Shoulder

Foot and Ankle Injuries:
For the general population plantar fasciitis accounts for more than one million doctor visits per year. Ankle sprains are reported to be the most common sports related injury and for individuals that suffer a lateral ankle sprain are at risk for developing chronic ankle instability.

Lower Back Pain

Low Back Pain:
Low back pain is one of the major forms of musculoskeletal degeneration seen in the adult population, affecting nearly 80% of all adults. There are a number of occupations that can lead to low back pain for example, enclosed workspaces like offices, manual labor, people that sit for periods greater than 3 hours. More than 1⁄3 of all work related injuries involve the trunk and out of those 60% include the lower back. These kinds of injuries cost workers on average 9 days of work per year. It has been estimated that the annual costs attributed to low back pain in the United States is greater than $26 BILLION.

Knee Injuries:
The incidence of knee injuries has also become a concern in recent years. There is an estimated 80,000-100,000 ACL injuries per year in which 75% are non-contact. In addition ACl injuries have a high correlation to arthritis in the affected knee.

Shoulder injuries:
Shoulder pain is reported to occur around 21% of the general population with 40% persisting for around 1 year and an annual cost of $39 BILLION dollars. Shoulder impingement is the most prevalent diagnosis in reported shoulder pain. The persistent nature of shoulder pain may be the result of degenerative changes in the shoulder structure, cartilage and tendons as the result of altered shoulder mechanics. Simply put, the extent to which we condition our musculoskeletal system directly influences our risk of injury. The less conditioned muscular system directly influences our risk of injury. Therefore, as our daily lives include less physical activity, the less prepared we are to compete in recreational and leisure activities such as resistance training, weekend sports or simply playing on the playground.
